Ex-banking and consulting employees were fired from Meta today

Meta, the tech company formerly known as Facebook, has had a brutal day. 8,000 employees, 10% of its global workforce, was or will be fired today. Among those put to the axe were former employees of a plethora of financial services firms.

Former employees of Citi, Goldman Sachs, and Barclays who'd moved to Meta have been writing tearful and heartfelt departure messages on social media. Many of them reported themselves as top performers at Meta. They now report themselves as #OpenToWork.

More than any other single financial services firm (that we saw), there were a lot of ex-Deloitte employees among the pile of discarded Metamates. A “Metamate” is what Meta’s employees call each other, apparently.

One of them who left Deloitte for Meta was a senior consultant for Deloitte and was booted from Meta after less than a year working there – on his birthday. He noted that, in performance reports, he regularly exceeded expectations.

On professional careers forum Blind, reception to the layoffs were more mixed. “Meta employees have the highest egos… On average Meta employees sh*t on every other company facing layoffs en masse,” one Amazon employee said. “I feel like the average Meta employee needs this chaos and this humbling exercise.”

One Meta employee, while trying to defend themselves and their culture in another thread on the platform, said “a little sympathy would be nice,” as “it could be anyone in tech next.”
